Ultron Poster Released for Avengers: Age of Ultron

Battle of the Week: Joker and Harley Quinn vs. Bullseye

$

0

Ladies and gentlemen, we're straying just a little bit from the Battle of the Week's usual formula for this one. Not only is this a two versus one brawl, but it also takes place in a unique setting. So yes, that means the rules are critical here and shame on you if you vote without taking a minute to read them. Seriously, they're important, so don't be a slacker. Now, for the Batman Villains' latest Battle of the Week, we thought why not toss Harley Quinn and Joker into a match? Joker's unpredictable ways and Harley Quinn's agility will make them difficult to face, but what happens when they take on Bullseye, one of Marvel's bloodthirsty villains? Will their crazy ways and use of the location allow them to overcome their accurate opponent or will Bullseye put down two of Batman's fiends once and for all?

Seeing as Daredevil's able to dodge Bullseye's attacks because of his radar sense and that isn't a luxury these two DC baddies have, we thought we'd balance things out by making the two Bat-foes feel at home in the environment. But is that enough for them to defeat Bullseye? There's a lot to think about here. Will Harley and the Clown Prince of Crime stick together? How will the location help and harm both sides? What happens when it comes down to close combat? How many times can the DC characters get tagged before dropping? Will Bullseye's arrogance play a role? Okay, ready to read the rules? Let's go!

Match Rules

  • Combatants are in character. To make things interesting, Joker and Harley Quinn are still in a relationship during this battle. How well things are going between them during the fight, though... well, that's for you to think about.
  • Standard versions. (Seeing as we don't know what Endgame means for Joker, assume this is the version before that. And yes, this is obviously fully functional Bullseye.)
  • The fight takes place in mid-sized theme park at night. It's unpopulated but the power is on. That means all of the lights, rides and buildings are active. Just to give you a better picture, let's say the place has a roller coaster, a fun house, a haunted house, several smaller game booths, and assorted rides you'd usually see at a theme park.
  • Joker is armed with a revolver, acid flower, hand buzzer, two knives, and one grenade. Harley has her signature hammer. Bullseye is carrying a great variety of throwing weapons -- he has everything from assorted daggers to throwing stars to playing cards to two sai. And yes, there is a booth with the BB gun game.
  • They begin 100 feet apart and visible. There's plenty of cover in the area. Everything from rides to booths are around them.
  • Neither side knows about the opposition; they just know they're in danger.
  • Incapacitation, knockout, death or submission/surrender all count as elimination.
  • Hey, you know what would be really cool? Treating everyone else in the debate with respect. If you think someone's saying something that just isn't true, go ahead and stick to the facts to point out why. There's no need at all to drop insults just because you disagree with someone. Seriously, this is just talking about a fictional fight, there's no need for immaturity and mudslinging.
  • If you think the poll isn't going how it should, making an informative post about why a character is being underestimated and spreading the word is far more useful than just complaining.
  • One more thing: you don't need to write an essay to have your post highlighted in Friday's article. Sometimes concise posts can be way more effective than a flood of paragraphs.

4451135-botw.jpg

Check the homepage this Friday for an updated article with the following:

  • The results of the poll.
  • Thoughts from the staff.
  • Viner arguments for both characters.
  • If we're lucky, blurbs from industry talent.

ACTION COMICS #40 and the Argument for Looser Continuity

$
0
0

Continuity can be a huge thing. As comic book readers, we tend to cringe when we see an event happen that contradicts another or simply doesn't fit in with other happenings. It's something that has slowly been ingrained into our thinking. We become so invested with the characters in which we spend so much of our time and money on. We want it all to make sense.

4452115-alex-ross-cover-to-the-collected

This wasn't always the case. Comic characters appeared in several titles and it really wasn't questioned. Look at Batman in the 90s with BATMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS, SHADOW OF THE BAT, LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT, and numerous appearances with the Justice League, Superman, and other books in the DCU. The same could be said for Spider-Man with his various appearances. The late 90s showed us characters like Wolverine, Punisher, and Ghost Rider also had the ability to appear practically everywhere.

When DC launched the New 52, continuity really became a concern with readers. We had that mysterious "five years" and we all wondered what the heck happened in that time, particularly how could there be four different Robins (since Stephanie Brown got retconned out of being one). This month's ACTION COMICS #40 shows us maybe we really don't need to obsess over continuity.

4452132-1.jpg

ACTION COMICS #39 wrapped up a bearded Superman's adventures in Smallville. Even that story may have raised some questions since Clark (or Superman) didn't have a beard in SUPERMAN, BATMAN/SUPERMAN, SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN, or JUSTICE LEAGUE. Issue #40 simply begins with Superman traveling through a portal, with no explanation how or why this was happening. He even mentiones, "But this Wednesday...I don't know where or how...I find myself spiraling miles beyond unpredictible...straight past continuity..."

The result was Superman ending up on Bizarro World with a pretty fantastic encounter against the backward character.

4452142-2.jpg4452152-3.jpg

Besides the lack of explaining how this story followed the previous issue, there was also the fact that we had just been introduced to Bizarro in the New 52 during FOREVER EVIL. Barely a year and a half later, we see this other, more classic version.

It seems writer Greg Pak was allowed to tell a wacky and entertaining story which also seems to be setting up the Bizarro miniseries coming in June. It doesn't matter that this issue didn't explain how Superman ended up going through a portal or the fact that Bizarro World and its inhabitants exist despite a more serious Bizarro having already appeared. We got a comic that was entertaining. When it comes to readers spending their money on comics, that seems like a huge selling point. Even on the comic review aggregate site, ComicBookRoundUp, ACTION COMICS has a combined average review score of 9.2 out of 10. People seemed to like it.

A looser continuity is something that DC Comics Co-publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio told us they'd be leaning towards when we visited the DC Office in February. This doesn't mean all continuity is being thrown out the window. We can see in the June 2015 solicitations for DC that there is a Superman story, "Truth," that will take place in ACTION COMICS, BATMAN/SUPERMAN, SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN, and SUPERMAN. So we can still have continuity. The characters and creators just don't need to be locked down to making sure every single issue lines up or connects to another. It's more about the big picture.

This isn't anything new either. We've been seeing this more and more lately. What immediately comes to my mind is Captain America appearing in AVENGERS, UNCANNY AVENGERS, and CAPTAIN AMERICA.

March 2013 cover dates.

We had Captain America spend 13 years in Dimension Z (time flowed at a different pace). We didn't know how this fit in with his appearances in the 616 Universe. Two of the books were even written by the same writer. It just didn't matter. Knowing where Cap's Dimension Z adventure took place would spoil the outcomes of other stories. If you didn't worry how it fit together, you could easily enjoy some great stories.

Having a looser continuity allows us to have different stories told at their own pace. This won't mean they'll contradict each other. Wolverine is still dead in the X-Men books. Thor (or Odinson) still is without Mjolnir. Lex Luthor is still seemingly a good guy. We won't have a character drastically affected or changed in one book and then see this ignored in another. In the big picture, these separate events will fit together to give us the definitive version of who the characters are today. This is likely what readers that wait for the trade paperbacks experience. It's not always clear where they fit in with the other titles due to the various printing schedules.

4452287-4.jpg

Continuity can be a good thing. We just don't need writers chained down and not allowed to take a character to different places because it would be too difficult to explain how they got there in another title. Writers and publishers are aware of this and we've been seeing this change slowly become more and more evident.

There will be some readers who fight this feeling of a looser continuity. As long as we keep getting great stories or even better ones, we all win. No one needs to map out a comic book character's day to day schedule and line up all the books. Just enjoy the great stories.

iZombie Episode 101: "Pilot"

The wait is over. Back in 2011, Vertigo released the iZOMBIE series written by Chris Roberson with art by Mike Allred. I immediately fell for the comic so with the news of a live-action television show, I had some fears and high expectations. As more information was released, it was clear it wasn't going to be an identical adaptation. Doing so could be difficult with some of the aspects and likely, it just wouldn't translate well. Basically, there are some changes.

Instead of Gwen Dylan, we get to meet Olivia 'Liv' Moore, a semi-obsessed med student that still managed to find time for her boyfriend. Right away, this is a departure from the comic. Getting to see her before she changes and actually seeing the change is fascinating in some ways. This will make it easier for viewers unfamiliar with the comic to connect to the character rather than simply be introduced to a character that is a sort of zombie.

After the incident that caused the change, we do see Liv trying to acclimate to what happened and the story jumps forward five months later. Liv gives up her chance at having a great career to work in a morgue (instead of working as a gravedigger as in the comic). This allows her to have access to brains, which she eats from time to time. Her supervisor is Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, who basically is one of the few friends Liv has.

In the comic, the main character was friends with a ghost and a were-terrier (think werewolf but more terrier-like).

Detective Clive Babineaux

If Liv doesn't eat brains, she'll become meaner and dumber. As a side effect, she gains a psychic sort of connection to the deceased. She gets flashes of memories and when a murder victim is the latest meal Liv snacks on, she inadvertently ends up helping a rookie homicide detective, looking to make his first collar.

The search for a killer takes the two to different places. It also helps to give Liv a sense of direction. Sharing the memories with a murder victim, she now has the urge to try to help the innocent.

This is a bit of a police procedural type show. We do have young actors to give it a lighter vibe. As a pilot episode, the show does have to introduce us to all the characters and set the tone and situation. It does a good job at that all around. Despite being a show centered around a zombie, it's all handled extremely well. There are some moments of cheesiness but it actually doesn't really deal with that aspect of the show. To remind us that Liv is a zombie, there is a moment of action where she does go a little into zombie mode.

By the end of the episode, you'll have fallen for Liv. You feel the plight she has to undergo. We get some moments of humor but it's not the forced sort that makes you roll your eyes. And just when you feel this could be just your typical help the victim of the week show, the ending is promising and gives a hint at a bigger direction the show could go in.

It's not a mirror image of the comic but that's fine. There is room for improvement but as this was the pilot, it's off to a pretty good start. I have to admit, I hadn't watched Veronica Mars when it aired but fans of the show will dig the fact that Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright are behind this one. There are even little bits of comic art used as the show returns from commercial breaks. Combining elements from the comic book series, the zombie genre, police dramas, and twenty-something programming, iZombie is a show many can and will enjoy. iZombie is a show you'll want to sink your teeth in.

The Flash Episode 115 - "Out of Time"

*Yup, there's some spoilers in here. The major ones are covered in spoiler tabs, though!*

"Must have been before my time."

The Flash is finally back! Okay, I know the break wasn't that long (Breaking Bad's was a full year, people), but when a show is this good and has so many interesting things going on, the wait sure does feel way longer than it actually is. Thankfully, "Out of Time" was worth the wait. As expected, there's some major developments with Harrison Wells -- developments that are sure to drop some jaws. Also, Weather Wizard setting his sights on Joe West brings about some solid performances and a whole lot of CGI fun.

First and foremost, how cool was the slow motion bit in the car? It seems like the show always manages to throw one of those slow motion sequences our way and they continue to impress. You'd think it would start to get old by now but it sure hasn't. I mean, obviously it's not as cheerworthy as the train bit, but it was still exciting stuff. That said, was anyone else wondering about what the villain was doing immediately after that moment? Sure, he'd be looking at the explosion, but Barry and Joe would still be in his peripheral vision, right? It seemed like they went about 15-20 feet to the left of the car. I guess Barry ran away with Joe right after that?

Let's talk about all of the relationship drama for a minute. First and foremost, this show continues to generate some lovable and adorably lighthearted scenes. In this case, it was the bowling date. A lot of credit obviously goes to the cast (remember when people were unsure about Grant Gustin getting the role and it turned out he's amazing?) and it was a nice way to balance out the tone after the dark and special effects-driven opening. On the flip side, the jealousy and Iris holding back the truth isn't exactly the show's greatest strength. Watching Iris continue to lie to herself is a little too familiar at this point and while I totally get Eddie's jealousy, it unfortunately isn't all that interesting. It just feels like another way of telling the viewer that yes, Barry and Iris are meant to be together. Hopefully they'll find a way to give Eddie something more attention-grabbing as that plot thread moves forward.

In a show that's full of fun and surreal craziness, Jesse L. Martin always brings a ton of heart to the show. Whether it's joking around with Barry or delivering something more powerful, his performance is always humanizing and completely absorbing. The guy's incredibly talented and his chemistry with Gustin is phenomenal.

The Caitlin and Wells scene was the perfect way to follow-up all of the mystery surrounding this villain. We know what's up (well, for the most part at that point), but watching everyone put together the pieces and get closer and closer to what we know is amusing. Watching Barry defend the guy is something we've already seen before (to be fair, that did instill some doubt in him), but the buildup with everyone else was definitely interesting and all of that buildup had some satisfying payoff in the scene with Caitlin. You couldn't help but feel the tension and wonder whether Wells is putting the pieces together in his head. Then, when that moment hits, it just gets your excitement level through the roof. Or at least it did for me and it should for you, too.

The one heartbreaking moment -- yeah, you know the one I'm talking about - had me totally captivated and kept me on the fine line between being okay and wanting to curl up in a ball and cry forever. I'm not going to lie, it had me holding back some tears, but a small part of me couldn't help but feel like this gripping encounter was slightly ruined by the way the show was promoted. Just like many other fans, I watched the trailer for what's to come. So, several moments from video that rushed to my mind and had me saying, "Yeah, even though this is incredibly emotional, there's about a zero percent chance it'll stick." Despite that criticism (which is really aimed at the people behind the promos and not the show), the scene was still so powerful. Seriously awesome performances from both of the people involved. And yeah, dancing around that spoiler wasn't easy.

That tidal wave scene was a double-edged sword for me. On the positive side, it brought about a satisfying (and overdue!) reveal, looked terrific, and brought about a huuuuuge plot development. Plus, seeing Barry push himself is just always awesome, you know? That scene has changed the stage and we're about to get some hopefully great stuff because of it. On the negative side, that action from Weather Wizard seemed to come out of nowhere. He made it clear he was going to kill Joe's daughter (she pays for the sins of her father and what not) and then probably him. But killing one unarmed woman suddenly turned into "everyone in the city will die with her!" I get he's an evil dude, but that escalated quickly. Based on what we saw, it didn't really make any sense for the character to take things to that level instead of just targeting Iris. Like I said, the scene looked great and produced some important things, but it feels like the villain did that just for the plot. It's not a big deal, but it stood out to me.

So, about that big Reverse-Flash reveal. It's cool he's Eobard Thawne, but -- and maybe my memory is a bit fuzzy here -- wasn't the first major Reverse-Flash encounter way too complicated for a "speed mirage" to be the answer to how it happened? It took him a noticeable amount of time just to create a static image of himself in front of Cisco and I remember the previous encounter being way more elaborate than that.

Minor criticisms: What's up with police officers being totally useless in the CW-verse? No one drew their gun when that dude started dropping threats? I get Joe warned them after getting struck, but you'd think at least one of them would shoot at this man who's clearly attacking the station. It would have been a really cool way of showing us that Weather Wizard can generate wind around him that's powerful enough to stop bullets. That would justify why Flash couldn't just run up and punch the baddie in the jaw.

The Flash is back and this episode reminds me why I love this show so very much. It's the kind of show that hits you with heartbreak and drama but never keeps you feeling down for too long. It's done a brilliant job giving us an emotional connection to these characters, so when it all goes downhill for someone, it hits us in the gut like a supersonic punch. But that feeling doesn't last forever because the show's every bit as focused on making us smile, laugh and fill us with awe. The first season isn't over yet and this show has already taken some huge steps forward. It's doing a stunning job embracing this character's mythos and giving us an enormous amount of fan service. Sure, I have some criticisms about tonight's episode. It's a bit of a bummer some of these developments won't stick (I was so happy the Barry and Iris story did what it needed to do, but at least now he knows how she feels), but the fact we're already jumping into the time travel deep end is so exciting. There's some leaps in logic and some of the relationship material wasn't that strong at times, but the second half of this episode was downright amazing and some very strong performances made it even better. "Out of Time" almost made me cry, it made me laugh, and it filled me with excitement and intrigue. I think what it did well really compensates for my criticisms, so yeah, The Flash's return is earning 5-stars. It's good to have Central City back in my life.

Recap

Skye's father is tracking down other "gifted" individuals from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Index. He says he wants to free them from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s shackles. What this means is S.H.I.E.L.D. has been keeping certain powered individuals safely tucked away. We saw some of this in the first season but in the case of someone like Karla Faye Gideon, she's allowed to live in an actual apartment only she's been forced to wear a device on her hands that prevents the razor sharp blades at her fingertips from being exposed.

Skye is still staying in the secure room on the Bus. She's also being put on the Gifted Index. Talking to Coulson, she says she's learning to control her powers and could go back in the field soon. Coulson talks to May about it. She says protocol is they have to be evaluated. Simmons is still upset that Fitz lied to her. Mac has Hunter locked up at a safe house.

May finds someone that could help evaluate Skye. Andrew Garner hasn't worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. In a while. She explains it's a different organization now. He has conditions to help. They can't be monitored or recorded. His priorities are to Skye. It's also revealed that this guy is May's ex-husband.

Skye doesn't want to talk to a shrink. When she finds out he's May's ex, she's intrigued to find out about May's past. He asks to stop avoiding the main issue and why she shot herself with the knock out gun. It's because she didn't want to hurt her teammates. She doesn't say much so he tells her he and May eloped. Accepting this little bit of information, Skye, in turn, admits she was afraid she couldn't control herself.

Skye's dad's group breaks into a maximum security asylum. There's a secret sub-basement holding dangerous individuals in the index. There's only two people locked up. Skye's dad is certain S.H.I.E.L.D. will come after them. They go to Wisconsin. Cal now has the following with him: John Bruno, David A Angar, Wendell Levi., Francis Noche, and Karla Faye Gideon.

Andrew and May catch up a little. Fitz was unaware May was married before and is weirded out a little seeing May with her guard down and laughing. Fitz and Simmons are talking about it, even though she admitted earlier she was still angry with Fitz, when the alarm goes off. Skye was sleeping and her powers are going off again. Coulson and Bobbi continue the hunt after Skye's dad. None of the individuals are really too gifted. Cal says together they'll be something. Coulson confronts Bobbi about her relationship with Hunter and that she was hiding it. She claims she broke it off when Hunter fell into his old habits.

The attack is at Coulson's old school. Actually, it's a school that his dad worked at. One of the gifted (Angar) lets out a yell and everyone on the football field either dies or gets knocked out.

May is taking the Bus to give Coulson back up. Skye insists she's going out too. She says she can hold it together and the fact that the Bus isn't shaking apart is proof she can hold it together.

Skye's dad wants S.H.I.E.L.D. exposed for their treatment of special individuals. May arrives with a gun to Skye's head. She says they're either going to contain her or kill her. He has to let the innocents go or she'll kill her. The teleporter arrives and takes Skye's dad. It's a fight for the rest. Skye starts to lose control. She pulls it back in but passes out. She has bruises on her arms. She has several burst capillaries and fractures. She wasn't containing the power, she was directing it inside.

Simmons wants to separate the Index into two categories--Enhanced and Man-made powers. Andrew's recommendation is Skye leaves S.H.I.E.L.D. altogether. He says it's too dangerous for everyone if she stays. May says they can help.

Mac reveals to Hunter they're working for another organization--the real S.H.I.E.L.D.

Skye's dad asks the eyeless teleported why they didn't take his Daisy. He says what they do isn't his concern. He's making too much noise. But he isn't one of them, he's a science experiment. What's to become of him? That's for someone else to decide.

Thoughts

This episode had some hit and miss moments. We do get to see some more superpowers as Cal gathers up a bunch of them. The problem is, none of them, except Angar, really had too much to offer (Angar was pretty cool though). That's likely part of the point. Cal (thanks to Maclachlan's performance) is all over the place. He has an almost goofy but deadly manner to himself. It does help to make him more unpredictable. The mention that he started taking a formula to make himself stronger fits with his comic book counterpart.

The struggle Skye is going through is really great. Her character has come a long way since the very beginning. Comic readers can see where she's headed. The fact that she's now trying to contain her power inside and the affect it had on her arms is a good reason for someone to build a device to help her contain her powers. An example can be seen on the just revealed cover to S.H.I.E.L.D. for June.

Finding out more about May helps to add to her character so she doesn't just come across as a cold robot. The struggle between Fitz and Simmons is both hard and fun to see.

Who is Cal being taken to see? If only it could be Black Bolt or Medusa. No way that could happen here. We do have to assume that this group of Inhumans is fine with Skye being kept with S.H.I.E.L.D. rather than bring her in for themselves.

The Real S.H.I.E.L.D.?

This is an interesting twist. We know Edward James Olmos is coming on board. The ad in this week's comics suggests that he's likely in charge of this other S.H.I.E.L.D. Obviously this will cause some conflict for Coulson and his team. One might think this could help lead into Civil War but the next Captain America movie is too far off. With HYDRA scrambling again and Ward off doing who knows what, Coulson's team will need something else to fight against to keep us on the edge of our seats.
