The Best Battles In Comics This Week: 1-22-16

$

TComics often feature huge fights with superheroes against supervillains. Sometimes we even have superheroes fighting other superheroes. Get ready to cheer (and possibly cringe) at the brutal punches being thrown in this week's selection of best battles.

There will be some spoilers below!

Tokyo Ghost #5

(By Rick Remender, Sean Murphy, and Matt Hollingsworth)

Last issue, Led Dent was forced to connect with the tech that allows Davey Trauma to control him in order to recover from his fatal wounds. With Trauma in control of Led once again, he began attacking the paradise within Tokyo. Blamed for killing Tokyo's leader, Jerome set out to stop Led and to avenge his wife. That's when things really started heating up.

Pulling Led off his bike, the fight begins to get more personal. Led tries using a gun but Jerome's swordsmanship quickly disarms Led.

While he's hooked up to the tech, Led is a beast. He brings this fight to an end before moving on to the rest of the city.

Sinestro #19

(By Cullen Bunn, Brad Walker, Neil Edwards, Drew Hennessy, Jonathan Glapion, and Blond)

With the Green Lantern Corps missing, Sinestro has declared his Sinestro Corps as Earth's protectors. When an error in judgment brought his new enemy, the Paling, to Earth's doorstep, it's up to Sinestro to save the day. With a goal of wiping out all emotion from the universe, Sinestro needs to stop them here, before it's too late.

One of Sinestro's new recruits uses her psychic vivisection ability to tear through some of their enemies.

Despite this and having forcibly recruited Superman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Scarecrow, and others, Sinestro realizes they need more help. The Paling's "absence of fear is a fathomless void and nearly impossible to overfill." He decides to call on even more recruits.

Even this isn't enough. Sinestro is able to call forth a certain member of a different Lantern Corps to amp up their abilities. Black Adam takes advantage of this increase in power.

It's now time for Sinestro to make his next move.

Uncanny X-Men #2

(By Cullen Bunn, Greg Land, Jay Leisten, and Nolan Woodard)

Mystique spent two weeks posing as a normal office worker while trying to uncover what the Someday Corporation is up to. Somehow she was discovered by the company's security services. She reacts quickly to their request to accompany them.

It's obvious Mystique isn't someone to mess around with. She easily takes out the security men.

Elsewhere, Sabretooth and Monet have tracked down Elixir in Vermont. He's decided to take a break from the crazy life of the X-Men and has been volunteering at a church. The problem is, mutant healers are being hunted and killed. Sabretooth and Monet want to bring Elixir in for protection.

Even Sabretooth's heightened senses can't detect an attack in time. He is able to move in time to shield Monet and Elixir.

Monet is no slouch. She grabs hold of another attacker and flies out of the building. Her minor victory is short lived as she's suddenly shot out of the sky.

As you can imagine, things are about to get worse for these mutants.

Unfortunately we're out of time.

Honorable Mention: Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Tuskan Raiders in Star Wars #15.

What is DC Comics "Rebirth" All About?

There's nothing like online rumors. When it comes to comics, there's always rumors flying around. There's been some buzz this morning, and I've had people ask me if I knew anything about the possibility of DC Comics rebooting or relaunching their entire line of comics with new #1 issues.

Possibly in response to these rumors, both co-publishers of DC Comics tweeted the same image:

Is this a confirmation to try to control the rumors or is it a nice tease to stir things up and get people talking?

We reached out to DC and the response was, "No comment."

Even Van Jensen, co-writer of The Flash seemed to wonder what this was about.

What are your thoughts?

Best Covers of the Week for 1.22.16

Every Wednesday is new comic book day and hundreds of comic books hit local comic shops and the digital market. While many readers pick books based on the creative teams involved or the stories and characters contained within, each comic is trying its best to grasp the consumer's attention with its cover.

Each week, we will be highlighting some of the best comic book cover art from the past week's releases and discussing the artists involved. Here's what caught our eye this week.

5014904-5010181-48.jpg

First up is Batman #48 by Danny Miki & Greg Capullo. The current story Batman is involved with deals with the villain Mr. Bloom, who is incredibly creepy and Capullo and Miki's cover gives off that tone as well as the feeling of defeat. This art team always produces stunning and memorable covers.

5014905-5008875-15.jpg

Star Wars #15 by Mike Mayhew makes the list this week. The artwork he did inside this issue was just as great as the cover. We're exploring the time between Star Wars Episodes III & IV, so we're getting a version of Obi-Wan Kenobi we've never seen before and Mayhew's depiction of the character tells us everything we need to know about him.

5014906-5008166-01.jpg

Silver Surfer returns to a new series featuring a great cover for his introductory issue by Mike Allred and Laura Allred. The Allred's have a very distinct style that hearkens back to another era of comic book art, all while giving it a temporary feel. There's a ton to look at on this cover, but the eye always leads back to Silver Surfer on his board.

5014908-5009442-01-variant.jpg

Captain Marvel #1 had a stunning variant from Adam Hughes this past week. It's cool to see this new series get kicked off in style with Hughes taking the reigns on this cover, showing off Carol Danvers flying through space. The shading and color here are real standout aspects of this piece of art.

5014909-5011551-02c.jpg

The new Street Fighter Unlimited series from Udon has been producing a lot of great covers. This week, we're highlighting the 1:10 retailer incentive cover by Edwin Huang. What's really cool about this cover is that it pays homage to X-Men: Alpha, which was the start of the classic X-Men story "Age of Apocalypse."

5014911-5009943-09b.jpg

Finally, Isaac Goodhart delivered this cover for Postal #9. This is another cover that pays homage to another piece of art, and Goodhart puts his own spin on the classic painting "The Runaway" by Norman Rockwell. Obviously, the Postal version of this piece is a whole lot bloodier and sinister than the original painting.

That's it for this week. If there's a cover you loved, let us know.

Doctor Who Showrunner Replaced After Season 10

$

Doctor Who showrunner, Steven Moffat, will be stepping down as the writer and executive producer after season 10. Revealed by the official Doctor Who twitter account, Chris Chibnall will be taking his place.

Moffat is the second showrunner in the show's history, since the series revamp in 2005, taking over for Russell T Davies. According to RadioTimes, season 10 of the show will not air until spring 2017, where Moffat's final 12-part season will air. Chibnall's debut will not happen until sometime in 2018.

Only one episode of the acclaimed science-fiction series will air in 2016 and that will be the Christmas episode. It is unclear if the current Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, will have a new companion. Actress Jenna Coleman wrapped up her final season as Clara Oswald last season and there's been no news yet on who will be playing the Doctor's partner-in-time.

New showrunner, Chibnall, is no stranger to the "Whoniverse," having written numerous episodes of Doctor Who and the Captain Jack Harkness spin-off series, Torchwood. In addition, Chibnall was a writer and producer on Broadchurch, which starred Who alum, David Tennant.

Doctor Who returns to television for the annual Christmas episode this December and Moffat's final season will air in 2017, with Chibnall taking over the following year.

Captain America: Sam Wilson #5

$

The new Falcon is revealed as Joaquin Torres deals with being turned into a half-bird man by a mad scientist. In addition, the Serpents are coming together to take down Sam Wilson, who is now a werewolf.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #5 has a lot going on in it. There's quite a bit for readers to keep track of and characters to follow, but Nick Spencer spins this book in a way where it's never confusing or hard to follow. The book really engages the reader rather than alienating, even if the reader isn't too familiar with some of these lesser-known characters in Captain America's world.

The book does get a bit wordy at times, really giving the reader a full scope of the story. The dialogue in these scenes is fine, so while some may find some scenes a bit daunting, it's crafted extremely well. Again, these scenes really give the reader an inside look to who these characters are and how they play into this story, which is building up very nicely. The series does have this mixture of fun along with some pretty serious undertones. Spencer is really putting his mark on this series.

Speaking of fun and serious, the new Falcon, Joaquin Torres is an interesting character. He's literally part bird, so he fits the role. We don't get to see a new costume, but we do get the start of his Hero's Journey in this issue, as he escapes the hospital, where he's being watched by D-Man, in order to go save Captain America. I have a feeling his story is really going to be the highlight of this arc.

The biggest problem, for me, comes from the fact that Sam Wilson is a werewolf. It lends this book a bit of silliness and frankly, it's just not something I'm personally a fan of. This arc has been a bit tough to get through, but that doesn't mean it's not an enjoyable read.

Paul Renaud and Romulo Fajardo work on the art on this book and while it may be tough to follow Daniel Acuna, even though Renaud worked on the last issue, Renaud and Fajardo have a style that stands on its own all while being partially in the same tone as Acuna, so it's an easy transition and has a nice flow between issues. There aren't giant, stand-out moments with the art, but what this team does exceptionally well is panel-to-panel storytelling, which is far more important than a string of splash pages.

We don't have a new costumed Falcon, but we get the new character's first adventure with Captain America. The issue is solid and a good read, but I'm much more interested to see how this all plays out against a whole bunch of villains in snake outfits. The art team does a great job here, but the main problem I have is the werewolf Cap story. It's not my cup of tea. Regardless, Spencer continues to do a great job on this book. I recommend picking this issue up.

Secret Wars #9

Secret Wars has been both a great and frustrating event at Marvel. Many are focusing on the release schedule and delays. Yes, delays are unfortunate and having the All-New, All-Different Marvel titles begin before the story took away some of the impact. Focusing on the story and issue, you have to admire what Jonathan Hickman laid out for us.

When looking back at the story, it's important to look beyond just these past nine issues. Hickman's story started before SECRET WARS #1 and you could even go as far back as his FANTASTIC FOUR run beginning in 2009. Hickman packs in quite a bit in this oversized issue. This has largely been a story about Doctor Doom but we see some of the other big characters confront the self-appointed god as they try to put an end to his rule.

There is a nice mix to the issue. We see some nice battles and confrontations, but there's also the exploration of the events and bringing it all to a close. Prior to reading the issue, you know it all needs to be wrapped up. We have a pretty good idea of the state of the Marvel Universe. Readers do get a couple questions answered dealing with some of the developments or mysteries seen in the All-New, All-Different Marvel issues. Reading the issue a second time really made me appreciate the full scope of the story and how it marks the end of Hickman's story.

I've been a fan of Esad Ribic's art and Ive Svorcina's colors throughout the issues. Even with delays in the schedule, I'm thankful they were on board with every single issue. They gave us some really great scenes and this will be a story that reads well once it's collected.

The SECRET WARS finale has arrived and it delivers on many levels. Despite the release schedule of this series with the newer Marvel titles debuting and moving past all the hype, it's a satisfying read. Jonathan Hickman has crafted an epic story that goes back several years. Keeping his run at Marvel in mind, you can see how this is a great ending to the story he started years back. It's not often we see comic book events maintain a high quality throughout. Ribic's art and Svorcina's colors have shined throughout the series. This is a story I will definitely read again.

Batman & Robin Eternal #15

What's going on with the dynamic between Tim Drake and Jean-Paul Valley? This issue explores the mantle of Azrael, as well as Batman's mission in the past to take down Mother and Scarecrow.

The issue takes a bit of a break from Bluebird and Cassandra to focus in on what's going on in Gnosis. Tim Drake brings in the unconscious body of Jason Todd as an offering to Azrael. Drake wants to train for Valley's order. This series is the first time we're getting to see Jean-Paul Valley in the New 52 and he's an incredibly intriguing and interesting character. Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (with James Tynion IV and Scott Snyder on the story) really do a fine job with his dialogue. He comes off as fanatical and devoted, which is exactly what he's supposed to be.

There is a bigger story going on here and while we're not going to spoil anything, in addition to developing Azrael more, readers are treated to a pretty exciting and fun story, that doesn't necessarily add anything huge to the overarching story, but that's actually what's nice about it. We actually get a pretty cool fight scene here as well, which shows off Tim's fighting ability.

I'm really not digging Jason Todd's mask. The mouth on the mask, which does not open or close, seems like overkill and comes off reading more like Red Tornado or Vision than Red Hood. There's something a bit more menacing about a mask with no mouth.

Christian Duce and colorist Gabe Eltaeb provide some solid art in this issue. Eltaeb is proving time and time again to be a solid and consistent colorist throughout all of his books. He knows how to make characters pop off the page. Duce does consistent work as well, but the overall art is just fine. There's not a giant wow factor to this issue that previous ones had. Don't get me wrong, it looks really good, but doesn't pack the same punch earlier issues did.

BATMAN & ROBIN ETERNAL is still solid and storywise, this is one of the bigger standouts of the series, giving readers more of a glimpse into Jean-Paul Valley. We get a cool fight sequence and there is a bit more about Mother and Scarecrow's past here. This series continues to be impressive and the best weekly series ever put out.

Each week we search and gather up the coolest comic book art you won't see in actual comics. The reason you won't is because artists often draw sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their websites, blogs, and Tumblrs. Some artists even arrange commissions through their sites so be sure to check them out. This is a way to see the artists working on one book draw characters from other comics or publishers.

Todd Nauck posted a familiar Stormtrooper sketch on his Tumblr this week.

Michael Walsh posted a couple commissions on his Tumblr.

Ron Salas posted a Mr. Freeze and a couple Daredevil posters on his Tumblr.

Jim Cheung posted a Flash skecth on his Instagram.

Marcio Takara posted a Wonder Woman and Black Bolt commission on his Tumblr. You can find his email there if you want to arrange your own commission.

Dustin Nguyen knows the truth is out there and posted an X-Files sketch on his Tumblr.

Sara Pichelli posted some commissions from Magic City Comic Con on her Tumblr this week.

Khary Randolph posted an Iron Man sketch on his Instagram.

Skottie Young posted a couple Daily Sketches on his Tumblr.

Joe Infurnari posted an old Han Solo sketch on his Tumblr.

Mike McKone posted some sketch covers plus a Blade Runner charity sketch (for C2E2) on his Twitter page.

Joel Gomez posted some new sketches on his Tumblr this week.

Agnes Garbowska posted some new sketches including some drawn using Sketch Book Pro on her Samsung Note5 on her Tumblr.

Kris Anka posted sone new sketches on his Tumblr.

Best Stuff In Comics This Week: 1-25-16

Every week, we take a look at some of the most bizarre, exciting, and downright unique things to happen in comics. Check out our choices below of the strange and wacky things that shouldn't be overlooked from this week's releases.

There may be some tiny spoilers below.

Star Wars #15

Best Revelation We All Suspected

If you’ve seen Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, you know that Luke’s Uncle Owen wasn’t too fond of Obi-Wan Kenobi. It was never stated why exactly he thought he was a crazy old wizard and didn’t want Luke to hang out with him. In this flashback story, we find out Owen’s true reason for wanting Ben to stay away.

Captain Marvel #1

Best Understatement of One’s Abilities

Captain Marvel is part of the newly upgraded Alpha Flight whose job is to now act as Earth’s first line of defense against alien threats. As some aliens prepare to attack, Carol states she’s “very good at punching things.” Clearly she’s more than just “very good” at it.

Best Star Wars Reference

During the alien attack, Puck tries quoting Luke Skywalker’s womp rats line but forgets how exactly it goes.

Batman #48

Most Ominous Conversation

Batman and Joker have essentially had their brains rewritten. They don’t recall their past lives. Bruce Wayne has created a new life and now ponders if he should try to go back to his old life. Running into the man that used to be the Joker, it appears he might know more than he’s letting on.

Uncanny X-Men #2

Best Reason to Have an HR Department

Mystique has been posing as a regular worker in an office to try to obtain information. When she’s discovered, she puts up a fight and makes a reference to reporting this to Human Resources. Trying to fill out this report would be interesting.

Best Description of How Cable Smells

Sabretooth is one of the good guys now. With fellow X-Men teammate, M, the conversation turns to his heightened senses. He mentions she smells better than 80% of the people he’s worked and reveals what Cable actually smells like.

Sinestro #19

Most Ambitious Recruitment

Sinestro has already made some crazy additions to his Sinestro Corps. His rings are fit for those able to instill great fear upon others. Having already added Black Adam, Superman, and Wonder Woman to help fight a massive threat against Earth, he sends out more rings to add to the members of the Corps.

Astonishing Ant-Man #4

Best Depiction of a Bad Decision

Scott Lang is trying his best to be a hero. When he thought the world was going to end before the Secret Wars story arc, he had a one night stand with the villain, Beetle. Running into her again, he was determined to stay away and but somehow ended up making another bad decision.

I Hate Fairyland #4

Most Brutal Aftermath of a Fight

Gert was transported to Fairyland when she was a child. She’s been stuck there for close to thirty years and while her mind has aged, she’s still in the body of a child. She recently discovered another child has arrived and her presence threatens Gert’s chances of returning home. They got into a fight and things didn’t go too well for Gert.

Ms. Marvel #3

Best The Matrix Reference

What do you do when a city has been exposed to a gas that is influencing them in bad ways? You spray them all with water bottles containing the antidote in a flashy manner.

Drax #3

Best Reason to Reconsider Helping Drax

Drax stopped two aliens that were attacking him and managed to keep one of them alive in order to assist him. When the alien does, Drax’s bonks him on the head since he’s not sure if he can trust him. At least he was polite about it.

Silver Surfer #1

Best Use of an Impending Alien Invasion Transmission

Silver Surfer has been traveling the cosmos with Dawn Greenwood of Earth. Planning on returning home to visit her father and sister, they interrupt a group of aliens planning on invading Earth and use their transmission to let Dawn’s family know they’ll be there soon.

Best Comic Character Cameo From Another Publisher

They thought the aliens were defeated but they managed to get some reinforcements to continue their plan. Part of the plan involved taking characters from fiction out of TV shows, books, and even comics. We see the series’ artist, Mike Allred’s character, Madman, make a cameo despite not being a Marvel character.

Best Aliens Disguised as Fiction Characters

When the aliens arrive on Earth, they use the power of all the myths and legends the planet has to offer. Do you recognize all these characters of fiction?

X-Men: Worst X-Man Ever #3

Best Writing on a Chalkboard

Wolverine is teaching a class of mutants at the Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters. On his chalk board, we see all the adjectives used for the various X-Men titles over the years. We also see what Logan thinks about Cyclops (Slim) and Sabretooth.

Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat #2

Best Reaction to Working Retail

Patsy has an idea for a superhero temp agency where heroes can do other jobs for income. In the meantime, she needs a job to make ends meet and is forced to work retail. Someone has to do it, but that doesn’t mean it’s the easiest job to have.

Best Comment About Today’s Readership of Comics

Patsy’s mom wrote stories about her and her friends when she was young. Unfortunately her ‘frenemy’ obtained the rights to the comics and published them. Patsy was recognized while working and was surprised that kids are still reading comics these days.

That's it this week. Let us know in the comments below what other Best Stuff you dug this past week. Special thanks to @djfanco for his suggestions. If you want to participate or felt we missed some other Best Stuff, don't complain, contribute! Especially if you didn't offer any suggestions. Each week you can @reply me on Twitter at @GManFromHeck by Saturdays using the hashtag #BestStuffInComics. We'll give you a shout out and I'll think you're pretty groovy.

Be sure to always look for the best stuff and always be sure to keep the workplace violence to a minimum.
